Renew your intentions, and follow these steps to help book your Umrah

#1 Travel Agent Vs DIY Umrah

Deciding to book on your own or with a travel Agency?

    • IF choosing a travel agent, skip to to step#6 and #7 as your travel agent will take care of most of the other steps

    • IF choosing to book on your own, follow each step carefully:

Should you book the umrah trip on your own, or go with a group/travel agency

Rule #1: If you've never been for Umrah before, always go with a group or travel agent, no matter how much you think you’ll save by going solo.

Rule #2: If you think you might get confused at any point—whether it's about the rules of Umrah, transportation logistics, or handling hotel issues—go with a group or travel agent. The peace of mind is worth far more than the potential cost savings.

Rule #3: The benefits of traveling with a group are invaluable. You’ll benefit from lectures and reminders by knowledgeable scholars (shuyookh), meet fellow Muslims from around the world, and have all accommodations—transportation, luggage handling, hotel check-in, and more—handled for you. You’ll also enjoy more insightful and spiritually enriching visits to historical sites, making your trip far more meaningful.

While booking Umrah on your own may be cheaper, unless you’re familiar with the entire process—from both a spiritual and logistical perspective—it won’t be as fulfilling. This is particularly important for families. For a family of four or more, having a capable leader to guide them safely through the experience can make all the difference, especially when working within a budget.

#2 Choosing A Date / Duration

Choose a date & duration for the trip

  • Seasonality and Its Impact on Flight and Hotel Costs:

    Low Season (More Affordable):

    • September to Mid-November: Lowest prices for both flights and hotels.

    • Mid-January to one month before Ramadan: Also offers lower costs, particularly for hotels and flights.

    High Season (More Expensive):

    • Ramadan: Hotels are the most expensive, though flights may not be as costly unless spring break overlaps.

    • Winter Break: Both hotels and flights are very expensive during this period.

    • Fall Break (Thanksgiving): Prices rise for both hotels and flights.

    • Summer: Expect high costs for both flights and hotels.

#3 Valid U.S. Passport

You need a Valid US Passport

  • A minimum of six months’ validity beyond the date of travel is required, otherwise your visa application WILL be rejected. So apply for passport now before setting up your trip.

Renew your US Passport HERE or online if you meet certain criteria

#4 Apply for a Tourist Visa

Here is how to apply for a tourist visa

  • Visit The Official Saudi Tourist Visa Website to apply for your visa

  • This is the The Most Comprehensive Walkthrough/Tutorial on how to Complete the Tourist Visa Application

  • Resize your photo for the tourist application using this FREE & Easy Photo Resizing Tool

Make sure to follow instructions at the bottom of the website

    • Click on settings to adjust the pixel and image size for each picture.

    • Click download once complete(down arrow located at the bottom of the picture )

    • Then upload it to the website

Don’t click any of the ads as it will scam you as no payment is required.

  • Protip: its easy to miss “Save & Add Applicant” So DO NOT PAY UNTIL ALL FAMILY MEMBERS ADDED as MINORS WILL need to be linked to an adult on the application)

  • -Check your SPAM mail

How to Confirm your Umrah visa with the Ministry of Hajj to make sure its legitimate

    1-Visit https://visa.mofa.gov.sa/visaservices/searchvisa

2-Entire Visa number for first value, then for second value choose either Passport number or First name. then complete the rest of the items.

  • This 10 year visa is a VERY new concept, here is our recommendations so far

#1 Under NO circumstances should you apply for it online(in fact its not possible as you will have to physically submit your passport for this visa).

    • Most of these online websites have yet to be proven to be reliable. in fact most are likely scams

#2 Choose a reliable and trusted travel agent to apply through and they can explain the details and turnaround time. However even then, there is no clear track record of agents doing this as this is new.

#3. You will have to physically send your passport

#4. 10 year visit visa is for adults(18+) and 5 years for children(0-18)

Once we have a reliable travel agent who handles this with good turnaround time, we will list some resources inshallah!

  • Visa on Arrival is a convenient option for travelers who prefer not to deal with online visa applications, image resizing, and document uploads. Upon landing at the airport, you can head to the Visa on Arrival desk, located before customs.

    At this desk, you will:

    • Wait in line

    • Pay the visa fee (which is the same as the online application fee)

After obtaining your visa, you can proceed to customs. While this option can simplify the visa application process, it may involve waiting in an additional line upon arrival, which some travelers may prefer to avoid if they can.

#5 Book Flights/Hotels

Time to book your flights & hotels

  • If not using Credit card points, we recommend booking directly w/ the airlines website as opposed to 3rd party booking websites

    - Protip: if your flight arrives in the middle of the night or very early in the morning(eg. 2am-10am)…DO NOT EXPECT YOUR HOTEL TO ALLOW YOU TO CHECK IN EARLY if the check in time is at 2pm. You MAY NEED TO book your hotel one night earlier to ensure no delays in checking in

    ·         For example, your flight arrives on Thursday, so you assume that you can book your hotel for Thursday. HOWEVER if check in time is 3pm and your flight arrives 4 am that day…don’t expect them to check you in early, you will need to book the hotel one day earlier so when you DO arrive there wont be any unexpected issues

-For hotel recommendations, check out Hotel Recommendations Page

-Keep in mind, despite hotels have a particular check in time...some hotels have a tendency to start check in AFTER ASR. So please be patient if that happens

#8 Transportation

See our Transportation Essentials Page for details!

  • if planning to use the Highspeed to travel between Mecca, Medina, and Jeddah, we recommend using the app as its less glitchy then their website

    Dowload the HHR app on

    Iphone

    Android

    Protips:

    • Please MAKE SURE you screen shot your confirmation number as sometimes they don’t get emailed to you and its hard to pull up your ticket information

    Baggage Rules(Randomly Enforced):

    Official Baggage Policy Here

They have very specific rules for NUMBER and SIZE of luggage. (1 medium size luggage and 1 bag per person) And although they DON’T always enforce the rules, they have done so many times. If you have more bags you can cargo ship them for a fee that might be shipped on your train or a later train. So you may need to pick it up the same day OR next day at the train station. If you don’t want to deal with that hassle, then consider other modes of transportation(taxi, bus, etc)

  • Reliable Taxi Services: Even if you plan to take the train, you'll still need transportation between the airport or train station and your hotel.

Both companies let you prebook your taxi and view prices in advance. Uber is also a great option!

Pro Tip: If you don't prebook, only use official taxi services from the designated taxi line outside the airport. Avoid anyone approaching you inside or outside the airport offering rides.

  • Uber: A Surprisingly Reliable and Convenient Option

Uber is not only more affordable than a taxi, but it also offers the convenience of easy, ahead-of-time booking. It’s particularly effective in certain areas:

    • From Medina Airport/Train Station to your hotel in Medina (and back)

    • From Mecca Airport/Train Station to your hotel

However, getting an Uber from your hotel in Mecca to the airport or train station can be tricky. The closer your hotel is to the Kaaba, the harder it will be for Uber to reach you, as you can't pin locations within the Haram area.

  • Did You Know? You Can Travel Between Medina Airport or Train Station to Masjid Al-Nabawi for Just $4 USD!
Perfect for those on a budget, Medina’s bus system offers a convenient and affordable option:

    • Medina Bus Track #300:
Runs between Medina's HHR Train Station and Masjid Al-Nabawi, dropping you off near the IHG Dar El Hijra Hotel.
      Operating hours: 7 AM - 11 PM.

    • Medina Bus Track #400:
Travels from Medina Airport to Masjid Al-Nabawi, also dropping off at the IHG Dar El Hijra Hotel.
Operating 24/7, with buses every 30 minutes.

Payments can be made via card or app. For more details, check out our Transportation Essentials page!

#8 Ziyarat

See our dedicated Ziyarat Page for details

  • For those seeking a meaningful and spiritually enriching Ziyarat experience, we highly recommend The Seerah Coach with Sh. Arif. Unlike the common practice of relying on taxi drivers for Ziyarat tours, Sh. Arif offers an in-depth, engaging journey through Medina’s sacred history.

With a background as a Medina University student and a hafith, Sh. Arif brings both knowledge and humility to the experience. Fluent in English and Arabic, he guides you through key historical sites with insights that resonate deeply. The city tour in Medina, lasting about 3.5 hours, takes place in a comfortable vehicle, providing ample opportunity to reflect and connect with the city's profound legacy. This tour costs $200 and is a truly valuable investment in your Umrah journey all while in comfortable Toyota Hiace(7 seater).

For a shorter, yet equally impactful experience, Sh. Arif also offers a Masjid walking tour, which lasts around 1.5 to 2 hours for $110. Each of these options is designed to enhance your journey with genuine understanding and connection to Medina’s rich history.

The Seerah Coach is an excellent resource for those doing their own Umrah without an agent, ensuring a complete and immersive Ziyarat experience in Medinah and Mecca!

  • The Haramayn Guide is very reputable Ziyarat Service

  • For a VERY budget friendly, but not as immersive experience, consider this service

Explore Medina’s historical landmarks with a convenient bus service that visits multiple significant sites. For the best experience, be sure to select the Red Route when purchasing your ticket.

  • Perhaps one of most beautiful and family friendly walk ways from Medina to Masjid Quba' is the Quba’ Walk Way

Walkway starts on the Northeast Corner of Masjid Al-Nabawi GATE 309. Here is one of the best videos to show you how to find where the walkway starts!

If the distance is too far to walk, there are plenty of golf carts for 10 riyal per person to take you there!

Or if your coming from Medina, you will have to be in a state of ihram prior to the miqat. If your not sure what all this means, that means you should be going with a travel agent/group and should not be undertaking a DIY Umrah. Packing Essentials

Packing with Purpose: Essentials for Every Step of Your Journey!

Ihram Related Gear

  • Turkish Made Ihram comes w/ the top piece(and rida) and Izar(bottom piece). This is an Excellent Turkish Quality Ihram. Avoid Chinese made ihram clothing at all costs

If your journey starts in Mecca, be sure to pack you ihram in your carry on to make sure you land in Jeddah in a state of ihram

If your journey starts in Medinah, no need to purchase one here and just purchase it when landing in Medinah to lighten the travel

  • Need space to place your phone, and other small items, all the while helping keep up you Izar(the bottom portion of your ihram clothing), this is a great Ihram belt to consider

  • The Archies Sandals are not only unbelievably comfortable, but very durable. I have done Hajj TWICE with these sandals AND a Umrah. And many have appreciated this recommendation.

When purchasing new sandals, make sure to break them in and wear them at least 1 week ahead of your journey to prevent blisters.

This is one of the most important items for men, do not forget otherwise it can lead to a very painful and miserable experience and making it difficult to walk. Place this tub in ITS OWN PLASTIC BAG so it doesn’t cause a mess anywhere else.

Water Bottles/Hydration/Sun Protection

  • Avoid heavy and very insulated bottles since you will be carrying this bottle all day for many days, here are a couple of great recs

Contigo Water Bottle: lightweight, simple, only needs one hand to open AND close the spout, has a ring to hook to your bag

Spray/Mist Bottle: the spray feature in this bottle comes in handy when walking in the heat and need to cool down. however it does need two hands to open the spout and heavier then the contigo water bottle, but still a good recommendation

  • Not any umbrella will do you will a Compact UV Umbella to help protect you from the Suns Rays.

You need it compact enought. to fit in your crossbody bag

LIghtweight enough as you will be holding it during the day hours for long periods of time

And the added UV feature makes a significant difference over conventional rain umbrellas

  • When the air condition fails in Arafah or even Mina...these become essential to remain focused during your ibada. Recs coming soon***

  • Choose any of your likening, we recommend that they are polarized for optimal protection

Power Banks/Cords/Adaptors

  • A power bank is essential to keep your phone charged during the day so you can stay connected with your group and daily plans. While there are many outlets, a power bank gives you the freedom to move around without being stuck near a wall.

Choose your specific needs for your cables/phone

    Anker Portable Charger USB A&C

Anker Portable Charger USB A only :

Anker with built in USB-C cable 10KmAH This powerbank already has a USB-C cable attached to it

  • This is compact Adaptor and Extension Cord in ONE from a reliable brand!

Whether its the hotel room, or in the mina/arafah camps, this will help keep your phone, powerbank and other items charged. has a USB-C and USB-A port as well. Also, you can get a share in the reward if other guest of Allah use this to charge their devices as well!

Organization/Packing

Tape the following to find it a mile away or a pile of bags that usually happens in the tight Mina Camps

    -Luggage/Suitcase

    -bookbags

    -shoestring bags

    -crossbody bags

-zamzam box(to reinforce and find ti easily when picking it up)

Choose any vibrant color or pattern

  • Tagging your luggage or even your kids is even more essential these days with Apple Air Tags

Comfortable Non Ihram Clothing

  • These Casual Sandals are light, comfortable and fit in our recommended cross body bag easily that can be work day to day and outside the time your in a state of ihram

Whatever sandal you choose, make sure to break them in and where them for at least a week PRIOR to starting your journey to prevent blister formation

We also recommend not picking black or white colors so its easily distinguishable amongst the sea of slipplers/sandals

  • We found the best, and coolest(literally) Boxers for Men when they arent in a state of ihram while walking the heat of Mecca and Medina

Back Bags/Cross Body Bags

  • We recommend this BookBag for a few reasons.

However, please note, there is no requirement to get this bookbag, its for those looking for a larger one or need to get one. if you have one that fits your needs, then that is the one to use.

This bookbag will fit the needs for all days of the Manasik-From the day you leave to mina and come back after completing your manasik.

Additionally, this isnt a traditional book bag as the main zipper is on the side, you will truly appreciate this when it comes to organizational purposes as you dont have to dig deep to find items in a typical bookbag.

  • Here is our recommended Cross Body Bag

Its affordable, good quality, fits your slippers in separate compartment (but please place your slippers in a plastic bag before placing in your bag),  fits essential items(waterbottle, powerbank, umbrella, sunglasses phone, money, etc), ease of access remains in front of you while carrying it, and its not bulky.

  • Check out this DrawString Bag.

Our General recommendation is that they arent to be worn daily from the hotel to the harm or even from the Mina Camps to Jamarat

This would be ideally used to place/store items to keep in Mina while taking what is needed to go to Arafah/Muzadalifah with their BookBag or Suitcase

Packing Guide for the days of Hajj

  • The days of manasik are 5 OR 6 days long(see our listed Courses Essential to understand why)

So you will need to pack for this duration,

    • Packing Strategy to consider for the days of manasik Thul Hijja 8-12/13

      • Suitcases, Booking bags, etc: choose from one of the following options(A or B)

        A) One Large Book Bag +Crossbody bag + Shoestring bag(mark each of these bags with Colored Tape to easily distinguish it)

-this strategy keeps both of your hands free, allowing you to be more agile and able to help other more easily

-when leaving the hotel, there is no need to wear the cross body bag and shoe string bag, these can be placed in the large book bag

-the shoe string bag will be used to store most of your items that you WONT be taking with you when you leave from Mina to Arafah/muzdalifah(eg. no need to take your non ihram clothing: socks, thobes, underwear, extra toiletries etc) on the morning of the 9th of Thul Hijja

-the cross body bag will be used during Jamarat as you may be out for a couple of hours depending on your camps location

        B) One carry on suitcase+One regular book bag OR Crossbody Bag

-this strategy is for those who are unable to carry a bag for along period of time, however the terrain isnt always flat so make sure to get a carry on suitcase with good quality tires

-You will still need to consider getting a book bag or Cross Body Bag for items they need while walking, standing(opening the suitcase every time you need something isnt ideal), and walking to jamarat.

    • We recommend packing these items

      1. Extra ihram for men in case one gets soiled. Women should pack their islamically appropriate clothing

      2. For men, 2-3 pairs of underwear, socks, thobes that they can change into after they are out of partial  ihram(see list of courses for details).

      3. Medications

      4. Duaa books, pdfs: See our Courses Essential for Resources

      5. Toothbrush/Miswaak, Toothpick/Floss

      6. Snacks if need be, but breakfast, lunch, dinner is served in the camps

      7. Over The Door Hooks-to hang ihram on doors while changing, showering, etc especially in the bathrooms o mina and arafah

      8. Best/Most Comfortable Flip Flopsfor men during state of ihram(see fiqh courses for why women dont need any particular footwear)

      9. Fragrance Free Soap(can be used as shampoo, bodywash and handsoap if your skin allows):  ideally the camps would have fragrance free soap, but there is no gaurentee

-How to Wash Brand: located in walgreens

-Kirks Soap Bar:  keep bar in a separate bag WITHIN your toiletry bag to prevent it from getting everywhere)

        -Native Unscented liquid soap/bodywash/shampoo

        -Fragrance Free Soap SHEETS

      10. Fragrance Free Shaving Cream-for those who prefer to shave their own head

      11. Fragrance Free Hand sanitizer

      12. Fragrance Free Deodorant Options

        -Arm & Hammer Deodorant

        -Native Deodorant

      13. Vasoline (just pick up from any store): essential for men, unscented and to be generously placed 1-2 times daily in the groin/thigh area to prevent chafing between the thighs. This is one of the most important items for men, do not forget otherwise it can lead to a very painful and miserable experience and make it difficult to walk. Place this tub in ITS OWN PLASTIC BAG so it doesn’t cause a mess anywhere else.

      14. Extra plastic bags for dirty items, laundry etc

      15. Water bottles/Hydration

Avoid heavy and very insulated bottles since you will be carrying this bottle all day for many days, here are a couple of great recs

-Hydration Packets: water ALONE wont be sufficient to remain hydrated, discuss with your doctor for your specific needs

Liquid IV choose a FLAVOR YOUR LIKE, lemon lime is the best and most people like that one

28 count Lemon Lime Liquid IV Packets

        Costco may have better prices.

    1. Power Banks/Cords: Choose your specific needs for your cables/phone

      -Anker Portable Charger USB A&C

-Anker Portable Charger USB A only :

-Anker with built in USB-C cable 10KmAH This powerbank already has a USB-C cable attached to it. This size batter is sufficient for most people

-A compact Adaptor and Extension Cord in ONE from a reliable brand!

This adaptor includes the most common type of Adaptor Saudi Uses Type G. Though the grounding plastic unit is a bit difficult to pull out, it does work

Whether its the hotel room, or in the mina/arafah camps, this will help keep your phone, powerbank and other items charged. has a USB-C and USB-A port as well. Also, you can get a share in the reward if other guest of Allah use this to charge their devices as well!

  • One of the most asked questions we get is How much do we need to pack when we leave Mina to go to Arafah/Muzdalifah?

So will need to pack for about 24 hours: pack light! the journey is long and there will be a lot of walking.

In your large book bag or carry-on suit case we recommend the following. Rest of the items you can keep in Mina(unless stated otherwise by your group leader) in another bag(eg we recommended a duct taped marked drawstring bag to to fit this stuff you wont be taking to arafah/muzdalifah )

    • Have an extra ihram for men, or extra pair of Islamically appropriate clothing for women

    • Duaa books, pdfs

    • Small bag of toiletries(soap, toothbrush, toothpick/floss, deoderant) with over the door hook to hang these items will using washroom or taking a shower

    • UV umbrella

    • sunglasses

    • Self-Inflating Sleeping Mat. Most groups DO NOT provide any mats during the night of muzdalifah. All you get is a carpet over the hard ground. For some this may be an issue, and your rest is very important, as a busy next day awaits you. This self inflating mat is compact and as big as a large waterbottle that will fit easily

    • Liquid IV packets to stay hydrated

    • Snacks (though lunch is served in arafah)

    • Spray bottle to stay cool (air conditioner usually breaks down in arafah) .

    • Medications
